Conference 2012: Exciting Developments

We can’t believe it’s over a year since the 2011 conference, which was a successful event, but success in itself merely sets the base level for making the next year even better. So after a couple of weeks of recovery, we got down to planning for 2012.

First job was to come up with the key themes for the event and, to ensure this year’s event is inclusiveness of all information industry, the conference will be based on two key these of: “Information Governance, Security and Law” and “Head in the Cloud, Boxes in the Basement”.

Based on these themes, we came up with a fantastic programme which reflects the direction that our profession is heading and will benefit not only the stalwarts of the profession, but those lucky enough to be taking their first professional steps into a new and exciting world where innovation will be key to the future of IRM. Our keynote sessions will be delivered by experts in the field, and include: Dr Victoria Lemieux – Director of the Centre for the Investigation of Financial Electronic Records and Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia; Dave Snowden – the founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Cognitive Edge; Julie McLeod – the Head of Research, Information and Communication Management at Northumbria University and the UK’s only professor of Information and Records Management; Oliver Morley – the Chief Executive of The National, Keeper of Public Records and Historic Manuscripts Commissioner, and government’s Head of Profession in Knowledge and Information Management.

On top of the keynote sessions and submitted papers, we are pleased to bring back the Training Stream for the 2012 conference. Three sessions will be led by Alison North, AN Information Ltd; John Wilson, JMW Mosaic and Ibrahim Hasan, Act Now Training. Alison will look at information governance and how to determine what sort of records management programme your organisation really needs; John’s session looks at compliance, and the strategies for benefits realisation, whilst Ibrahim takes an in-depth look at the Data Protection Act 1998.

As ever, we are excited to confirm our headline sponsors for the 2012 conference. Gold sponsor for this year’s event is Iron Mountain: the global leader in information management and storage services. Their services help businesses optimise and protect their information – regardless of its format, location or lifecycle stage – and ensure proper recovery and compliance. Iron Mountain will also be leading a session entitled “Beyond cyber threat. What are the key information risks for businesses in 2012?”.

We are similarly excited to be working alongside Box-it again, as this year’s Silver Sponsor. They will also be leading a session entitled “Out of the box, into the cloud”. Box-it has been established as a Document Management solutions provider for over 25 years. They offer solutions to manage both Physical and Electronic Documents through 16 data centres across the UK and Ireland, combined with state of the art digital processing centres. Box-it will be a great addition to the IRMS Conference.

As always, the benefit is not just finding out what some of the leading proponents are thinking, but also getting around and making new and useful contacts especially where you may be the only one in your organisation carrying the torch for the principles of good IRM.

Bookings are coming in thick and fast and all the signs are we will be having an even better event in 2012 than 2011. So if you have not already booked then please hurry as you really don’t want to miss the best Conference in our profession in 2012.

Choices, choices, choices…

For those who didn’t select beforehand the huddle around the boards to book the parallel seminar sessions has to be a priority.

For myself I’m looking forward to hearing from Christopher Graham, the Information Commissioner, on the changes to the Data Protection Act.

I have to admit to being torn between sitting in on Graham Robertson’s session on Information Audits in the training stream – a subject dear to me, or the MoReq debate.

The keynote from Ed Sautter will also be of great interest. eDiscovery & eDisclosure are subjects that have effected companies who are US based, or who have US offices for a few years, but is now part of our legal landscape and a judges view of what constitutes information and records could be, well, interesting. This could well be the tipping point where, at long last, companies actually realise that information managers, records managers, and archivists are a part of corporate governance and risk – that it is not a preserve of the executive.

Sunday Review

And so to my 10th IRMS/RMS conference, the third in Brighton, and it is interesting to reflect on the changes without radical change that has taken place over those years.

On this occasion the welcome party from the Executive were on hand to meet and greet the delegates as they arrived at the Hilton Metropole on a bright Spring afternoon.

Following the opening address and welcome from Matt & Rob in the exhibition area Will Kintish led the delegates through a fun networking skills workshop of “Working The Room”, and with a higher than usual percentage of conference newbie’s this year the exercise of putting faces to names was a tremendous.

Our thanks to Box-It for sponsoring the welcome supper of Cod Loin & Chips followed by an Eton Mess as part of a British seaside theme, complete with buckets & spades, end of the pier games and ‘seagulls’.

During the meal Will Kintish continued his theme on networking with a session on “Breaking the ice with confidence” though I suspect polar explorers might have been disappointed.

In IRMS time honoured tradition the groups of friends, old and new, and colleagues spilled out to the bar to continue the networking as the conference warms up.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside……

Conference is here!

After many months of planning the conference has finally arrived.  Two days of learning, building on skills and meeting up with old friends and making new ones.

What are the highlights – well ask a dozen different people what they are looking forward and you’ll get a dozen answers probably but I am looking forward to meeting new delegates, people who have never been at an IRMS conference before.   We have a newbie session for these people to meet the Executive Committee and the Chairs of the Groups at the very beginning of the conference.  I’m also looking to hearing from the Information Commissioner on Monday morning.  Obviously the Gala Dinner is the social highlight and my very favourite part of being Chair is giving out the annual awards and this year we have a range of very deserving winners.

Whatever your highlight is, I hope that you have an enjoyable conference.  Don’t forget to make the most of the exhibitor showcase, make new friends and lets just keep our fingers crossed for some good weather.

See you in Brighton!

Once upon a Conference…

Well, after all the planning, doing and hoping it would all turn out ok, Conference is finally upon us!

As I sit here in the stately surroundings of the Treasury Counting House Turret here at Castle-IRMS, I look out of my window and see all manner of happy final preparations going on.

Honoured speakers are pacing the courtyard putting the final touches to their talks and rehearsing their oratory…ah, such insights and thought provoking ideas await you delegates!

Our Conference Director and our Conference partners from Benchmark are loading up the wagons ready to head-off for the Sunkist climes of the South Coast.

Chair and Vice can be seen finalising Chairly and Vicely things whilst our esteemed Secretary is gathering last-minute papers and reports from Exec colleagues…

Ah, such a happy scene…

Looking at the programme parchments here on my desk, there is much I could tell you about what we have in store for delegates over the coming days…much that I could say indeed…but then, were I to do so, it would spoil the surprise now wouldn’t it!

All I can and will say is this…our Conference Director Rob Hutton together with Kirsty Douglass from our Conference Partners Benchmark have cooked up a veritable cornucopia of IRM delights for you this year…a veritable cornucopia!!

For all those attending, I wish you all a safe and pleasant journey to Brighton and I look forward to joing you for a fabulous time over Conference…and for those unable to attend this year, for whatever reason, I hope that we will see you at an event soon!

So, time now for me to close and go check on my coach and horses…

Then, of course, it will be time to wake up…and make my final preparations for the actual Conference which, whilst not quite the fairy tale affair described above will nevertheless, I am very sure, be one to remember and to be talked about for many years to come!

Onward to Brighton!

Will the Larks meet the Night Owls?

No not the title of a new Mills & Boon novel. The IRMS conference, as well as the intellectual input, is renowned for its networking and social aspect with some delegates debating long into the night. Well this commentator could burn the candle at both ends for a while when he joined the society but now…..

The conference is a tremendous opportunity to meet old friends, reminisce, and talk of the changes in the profession – and whether those changes are real or just the remodelling of an age old conundrum.

However I know we will extend a very warm welcome to those new to the conference, members and non members. The Society is more than a professional body, but is a community – and whatever the merits, or otherwise, of social networking and other fads the face to face interchange and debate can never, in my humble opinion, be successfully digitised.

So a warm welcome will be extended to friends old and new at the IRMS Conference, Hilton Metropole in Brighton.

HELLO TO ALL IRMS MEMBERS

Hi and hello to all members and welcome to new members of IRMS.

Hi and hello to all members and a big welcome to new members of IRMS.

I look after the IRMS Secretariat, dealing with all membership applications, invoicing, and answering any queries that come in.  I also deal with advertising on our website and the IRMS bulletin. Don’t forget all members qualify for a discount when advertising on the website or in the IRMS bulletin, so you’re bound to interact with me at some point.

IRMS have gained quite a few overseas members recently, from Nigeria, Ghana and the Czech Republic and I know that a few of these members are coming over especially to attend the conference in Brighton only a couple of weeks away! We are all looking forward to meeting with them, and sharing experiences.

IRMS will be having a stand in the exhibition hall and I hope that you will make a point of coming over for a chat and introducing yourself. It’s nice to be able to put a face to people that I deal with.

So I’m counting the days down to conference and I am looking forward to meeting up with all of The Exec and IRMS members.  See you all there!!!

Excitement is Building!

Only a few weeks to go and the excitement (or should that be hysteria) is building, it seems like time has just flown since last years conference. probably something to do with juggling a busy work schedule sorting out various things for this conference and spending my own time chasing around after a 2 year old that is into everything. However, all the signs for this year are positive, places have been filling quickly despite the doom and gloom brought on by the economic climate, hopefully it is the realisation that good information and records management helps and does not hind good business practice.

Also please remember this year we have a special training event aimed at those new to the world of IRM. this is a must for all those who have been thrown in the deep end, so if you have any new members of staff or other officers looking to gain a foothold in the world of IRM this is an ideal place for them to start. book a place now to avoid disappointment.

Well that’s about it from me for now, back to the day job and I hope to see you in Brighton

Best wishes

Rob

What makes a conference?

Everyone wants different things from a conference and to be honest, I think that’s one of the wonderful things.  There are some people who go to a conference for the plenary sessions, to learn what the great and the good have to say, to be informed and educated.  These Plenaries are the mainstay of any conference and its great that we have such high profile speakers this year.  Others prefer panel sessions and smaller breakout sessions where its easier to ask questions.  I know of people who attend conferences to attend just one session.  Given the range of speakers we have this year, I can see that happening again and whether your interests are in data sharing agreements, sharepoint or improving your skills, there’s something for you!  There are others who attend for the exhibitors and spend every coffee break and lunch chatting with the vendors in order to be able to go back to their employer with a recommendation.  Others enjoy the social side of the conference, seeing friends and contacts, networking and sharing expertise and experience.

For me its all four of these.  With the range of speakers, who couldn’t be impressed?   I am particularly looking forward to the sessions from Chris Graham, Rosemary Jay and Elizabeth Shepherd.  The sessions on Tuesday look interesting and I feel spoilt for choice.  I am also looking forward to talking to a lot of the exhibitors, we are going through a lot of change at work, as many organisations are at present and there’s some help that we could do with and I’m sure that some of the exhibitors will be abel to provide that help and finally, I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces again and making new friends.

This will be my eighth IRMS conference and every one has been enjoyable, informative and also unique.  I am sure that this one will be no different and look forward to seeing you there!
