"Meet old friends and make new ones”
Jane Proffitt, IRMS Groups Director & David Bowen, IRMS Treasurer        May 2017

Well I am sure you will all agree with me – just where has the time gone since we were in Brighton for the 2016 Conference? A whole year has passed us by but we are still able to reflect on it as if it was only yesterday. It’s fair to say that as soon as one conference ends the Exec start planning for the next one, and here we are, just a matter of days away from becoming "Agents of Change”...

"People Make Glasgow!”
Claire Johnson, IRMS Scotland Chair                                         May 2017

The sun has been out in Scotland, the skies cloudless and blue, so all is lining up nicely in anticipation of #IRMS17 in Glasgow. Scotland does not usually get good press for settled sunny weather so even though it will probably have changed for the worse by the 21st we can definitely provide a friendly welcome. It’s been a while since Conference was in Scotland but I think the Edinburgh conference is still remembered fondly for a diverse and interesting occasion. It’s a tough act to follow but Glasgow will always give it a try! The local talent will be in evidence yet again on the programme with speakers from a wide range of organisations and the world of business....

"The event that shines brighter than the rest!"
Emily Overton, IRMS Training Director                                          May 2017

Conference time has come around again, and it seems to have snuck up on me this time as I’ve not joined a single conference call and in fairness, all I’ve done is organise for the IRMS stand to be in situ. So, whilst I’ve been burying myself in training discounts and the like, the Conference angels have been hard at work....

Are you GDPR Ready?
Greg Stewart, Oyster IMS                                               May 2017

When the EU’s GDPR was announced, it was due to be enforced in the UK on 25 May 2018. Following last year’s ‘Brexit’ referendum the UK Government has confirmed that the UK will implement GDPR before the UK leaves the EU.Furthermore, the GDPR will continue to be relevant for many organisations in the UK – most obviously those operating internationally.  So, as we will have to comply with the GDPR, it remains important to understand the implications of the GDPR....

"How far we’ve come!”
Meic Pierce Owen, IRMS Immediate Past Chair                                               May 2017

As I write, it’s early morning in the first week of May and I have just sent off emails containing the script for the Awards Ceremony and details of the accreditation panels on Conference Sunday. This is a fairly typical morning at this time each year as we tidy off the final bits and bats ahead of the Event… and I confess that I’m starting to get the Conference tingle – it is close now!...

"We own the picture, but they own the pieces!”
Reynold Leming, IRMS Conference Director                                               May 2017

As the countdown begins for the final few days before Conference, I am reflecting on the effort that goes into this from so many people, and how this well-oiled machine copes so brilliantly with putting together this multi-faceted event...

Technology’s role in data protection – the missing link in GDPR transformation
Sponsored by Hewlett Packard Enterprise
                     April 2017

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) delivers a fundamental change in how data controllers and data processors handle personal data. Instead of an ‘add-on’ or afterthought within business operations, protections for personal data will now have to be designed into the very fabric of data processing systems, meaning that entities will need to re-examine how they approach the use
of technology in their organisations....

Rich Hale, Active Navigation                                               May/ June 2016

I think this year was my 5th IRMS Conference. A mere amateur perhaps compared to some but with that much committed I think I can register valid comment and this year I’m pleased to be able to reflect on what I felt was a noticeable ‘sharper’ event. Its clear that the formula for IRMS Conference is well established but within that consistency it was great to see that ‘sharpness’ embodied in a more focused and impactful gala dinner and awards – the show piece for Conference....

Not only is 2016 my first Conference as part of the Exec, it’s my first IRMS Conference at all! So what am I most looking forward to? As always there’s a great line-up of speakers – both as keynotes and in breakout sessions; there will be plenty of opportunities for informal networking and to speak to the vast range of exhibitors; and of course there’s the Sunday social and Monday night gala providing a relaxed interlude within the 3 whirlwind days of learning!...

From Brighton to Bulls – Catching up with the IRMS conference

Jeremy Clarke, Sue Hill Recruitment                                   19th May 2015

The valleys were lush and green, the Welsh flag whipped in the wind as the sun set over the land of our fathers. All was as you may expect … until you spot the bucking bronco sat on the neatly manicured lawn, but more of that later.

This was the scene that greeted delegates on Sunday night at this year’s IRMS Conference at the Celtic Manor Resort near Newport. After a successful stint at Brighton’s Hilton hotel the conference went back on the road again this year, and what a fabulous venue it was, kudos to the organisers at the IRMS!...

It’s time to start our ‘digital diet’
Jo Moorshead, The National Archives                            10th June 2014

One or two of us were fortunate enough to attend the annual Information and Records Management Society (IRMS) Conference  in Brighton, on 19-20 May. One of the biggest themes running across the two days was the volume of digital information and the need to start disposing of what we don’t need...
