Frank Rankin has over 20 years of experience as an information governance
practitioner. A graduate of the Universities of Glasgow and Liverpool, he has worked in
records management, freedom of information, data protection and information
security for higher education, local government, central government and the NHS. He is
currently Information Governance Manager for NHS Education for Scotland. Since 2013
Frank has developed his own business as a freelance information governance trainer
and consultant trading as infogov.scot and also working as part of The InFolk Collective.
He also delivers training on behalf of Act Now Training Ltd.
From May 2018, the EU General Data Protection Regulation mandates the
new role of Data Protection Officer (DPO) for all public authorities and for
businesses conducting significant processing of personal data. So, what does
the role entail? Frank will explore the scope of the role, including the
mandatory relationship with senior management and the critical involvement in
data protection impact assessment and business planning. Frank will also, consider the high visibility of the DPO as a contact point for the public and for the
Information Commissioner, and the DPO’s central role in the new mandatory
breach reporting framework.
