Marketing Manager, Essex Record Office


Keith Grinsted joined Essex County Council in September 2015 as Marketing Manager for the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford. 

Essex Record Office holds 1,000 years of Essex history.  In fact the oldest document we hold dates back to 962.  It is an Anglo-Saxon charter from the reign of King Edgar.

His role is to commercially market services offered by the Record Office.  These include; archive services to other organisations, online genealogy subscriptions, digitisation (documents, photos, audio / video recordings), sound and video, oral history training, conservation, and conference centre.

Confronted by the financial pressures faced by the wider public sector, the Essex Record Office built a business case around income generation. 

The ultimate aim over the next 3-5 years is for the record office to become cost-neutral to Essex County Council. Something faced by similar institutions around the country. 

The record office must perform a fine balancing act between providing a free at point of delivery service to the general public, whilst offering other services, on a paid for basis, to the heritage and commercial marketplaces. 

Keith details the journey to date and the road map for the future.
