Past, present and future of Information Governance and Records Management
This presentation will provide an overview of ‘how we got here’ and ‘where we are going’ for both IG and RM. It starts with the backdrop of the ‘bureaucratic era’ when typewriters and paper records ruled, followed by the ‘era of partial automation’, including early computer-based (separate) document and records management systems and the introduction of disruptive technologies such as email. The era included the development of rival standards and EDRMS systems designed to comply with those standards, with email continuing to disrupt attempts to centralise recordkeeping and IG. The early 2000s saw even more disruption with the arrival of smart phones and cloud-based technologies, the inability of RM standards to keep up, and with Google initially and then Microsoft becoming the dominant vendors. We are now in the era of cloud-first computing, ubiquitous connectivity, and AI, all challenging traditional approaches to both RM and IG. But how much hype is there? The future awaits …
