Forgotten Files or Firm Foundations?
This presentation will share a compelling case study from a law firm, where the unexpected discovery of legacy records prompted an organization-wide response. Initially, the records’ significance and ownership were unclear, raising compliance and operational concerns. Through raising wider awareness and a survey of the records found, it was possible to gain support from facilities, internal communication and knowledge management, ultimately developing a comprehensive proposal for senior leadership. This collaborative approach fostered a wider appreciation of the history of the firm and a culture of shared responsibility for records management. Further liaison with external stakeholders, including a local archive service, a historian and former clients of the firm led to a comprehensive proposal that was accepted by senior leadership. Attendees will gain insight into strategies for mobilising cross-organizational support, navigating complex decision-making, and advocating for records management beyond compliance but as a strategic long-term activity.
