The Problem of Email (and How to Fix it)

Email is the next big problem facing records managers and archivists.  How to sift through the millions of messages across multiple mailboxes to locate and link the records that really matter, while respecting GDPR and removing ephemera.  In 2023 Cabinet Office developed the first system for reviewing digital records using algorithmic technology, they are partnering with the University of Salford on a range of experiments applying AI to the problem of sifting the large volumes of email preserved in their digital archives, and testing assumptions about what email records actually are.  In this session Cabinet Office will discuss their findings and how records managers can use this knowledge to develop email records management for the future.
