Retention at Scale: Application and Learnings

15:40 - 16:20

The newest iteration of the Jisc business classification scheme (BCS) and records retention schedule (RRS) was published in February 2025. The purpose of the tool is to provide a set of guidelines for higher and further education (HE/FE) institutions for their retention setting and BCS development. These are not intended to be edicts, but as a basis for starting conversations around local application of retention.

The session we would like to conduct at IRMS 2026 will introduce the tool, will outline its practical use cases and offer advice to other sectors who may see benefits in developing a similar framework for themselves. We will briefly discuss the process we undertook to get the working group together, how communications were managed and how we coordinated the multi-organisation team. We will then move on to talk about the practical applications of the tool as well as its limitations.
